Essex Regiment, Essex Yeomanry plus their predecessors in Militia and the 44th (East Essex) & 56th (West Essex) Regiments of Foot

By virtue of its geographical position in respect of the seat of power in London and foreign enemies in Europe, Essex has long been regarded as an important military area for armed units and military bases.

The 44th East Essex and 56th West Essex Regiments of Foot were well known regular army units taking part in many of the campaigns that forged the British Empire.

These regular units were backed up by local militia and volunteer rifles, artillery and engineer units until 1880 when a reform on the armed services saw the birth of the Essex Regiment.
